The Industrial Revolution had a major effect on the town, transforming it from a quaint village with a population of just 2000 inhabitants to a vibrant town of 86,000. Famous for the production of spurs, saddles, metal ware and its limestone quarry, Walsall owes its heritage to many of these industries. To this day, it is still referred to as the ‘leather capital of Britain’.
Nowadays, Walsall is a densely populated area boasting a population of almost 175,000. The region has undergone a number of new developments over the years and is now home to an array of modern architecture and a variety of action-packed activities. Multimillion pound projects in the past decade have included Waterfront North and South, as well as the redevelopment of Walsall Manor Hospital and the creation of Walsall College.
With so many attractions to explore in Walsall, you’re certainly spoilt for choice. Learn all about this town’s rich heritage at the Leather Centre Museum, home to an operational workshop, or alternatively take a trip to Barr Beacon, a 227 metre-high hill that overlooks the town and that provides stunning panoramic views of the Midlands.
Other nearby allures include the local art gallery, named after Ethel Mary Flint – the Mayor and Royal Academy exhibitor. It is here you can view works by famous artists such as Van Gogh, Jacob Epstein, Monet and JMW Turner.
